AAC

Alternative and Augmentative communication

AAC related to aided and un-aided communication. Picture supports to help make choices or a dedicated speech generated device are included in this category. Gestures and body language are parts of AAC that we all use almost everyday.

Children who are struggling to develop spoken language at an expected rate can use AAC to help them communicate.

AAC in no way hinders spoken language. It provides a library of symbols for students to effectively communicate and continue to learn language skills. Overall, language is the exchange of a symbol for understanding and AAC supports that idea.

AAC comes in many forms and should be individualized for student needs. Consider AAC when children are not adequately communicating independently. If children are becoming frustrated with language, being understood, and having wants/needs met, AAC can be a great option.
