Fluency
Stuttering
Fluency relates to our flow of speech. The most commonly known category of fluency difficulties is stuttering.
Stuttering is characterized by speech getting “stuck” or becoming “bumpy”. This can be describes as blocks, prolongations, repetitions, and interjections.
Between 5-10% of all children stutter as their language develops during ages 2 and 6.
Between 75-80% of those children with stop within 12-24 months without speech therapy.
Speech therapy should be considered if:
stuttering continues for more than 1 year
there is a family history of stuttering
your child is a boy
there are additional concerns (speech errors, expressive/receptive language concerns)
the stuttering is severe (over 10%)
the stuttering began after 3.5 years
your child becomes aware and uncomfortable
